Can I complete my most epic mission to date? or will a hunting party end it.. [ENGLAND PART 6]
Просмотров 603 тыс.Месяц назад
This gargantuan adventure reaches its climax 19 miles from the North Sea coast, and as if this mammoth 5th day hadn’t tested me enough, I was now perched on the edge of a private hunting estate watching men furiously wave flags on my line to the soundtrack of multiple shotgun blasts. With plenty of farmland and another terrible forest beyond that, this mission was far from over. Will I make it ...

We're into day 4 of my most epic mission to date and having almost escaped the damp twangy clutches of Kielder forest, I now had the opportunity to deliver myself 12 miles from the coast in one fell swoop. 21 miles of more rugged mountains and forests would be a huge physical endeavor in it's own right, but it also happened to be bookmarked by a private and very active hunting estate, and a gig...

Day 3 of my most odds defying mission to date is under way and massive lake crossing aside it's a case of rinse and repeat; 11 more miles of dense, tormenting pine plantations to be completed before the disastrous descent of darkness. This time we do have more moorland to break things up along with better weather, but the trees, both vertical and horizontal, would do their very best to slow me ...
The most brutal day of missioning on record [ENGLAND PART 3]

My most ambitious adventure to date continues and it's out of the farmland of Day 1 and into the remote, rugged forests and hills of Day 2 and beyond. 10 miles of pretty much solid pine plantations was the impossibly tall order of the day, and with utterly miserably freezing weather, I was guaranteed to be pushed to my physical and mental limit. All I could do was get my head down, and pray for...

Day 1 of my most ambitious adventure to date continues and not only is there plenty more farmland to sneak through, but there is also unforeseen trepidation ahead. If anyone is interested someone's already tried a straight line mission across the Canadian province of Ontario (Southern Ontario) and I think what happened in that mission represents the problem Geowizard would have crossing any US state or Canadian province, and that's people are just much more protective of their land. The person who attempted an Ontario mission was stopped by the OPP (provincial police) after someone caught them. There was no conversation or interaction of any kind nor any warning, someone just straight up called the police and the OPP took care of the situation. And Southern Ontario probably most resembles the kind of missions that Geowizard has attempted (e.g. mostly farmland). In most other provinces you're truly going into the wild where encountering things like bears is very possible. And attempting to cross any US state shares the same risks that crossing any Canadian province has plus having a gun pulled on you. In fact even in Canada you're risking having a gun pulled on you. I'd hope the chance of actually being shot is low but does Geowizard or anyone else want to deal with an upset farmer pointing a rifle at you?

    Your best bet for a straight line USA mission would be going in a straight line across a national park or across bureau of land management or forest service land. This would actually be pretty doable if you got in touch with the right ranger station at the right park. It would have to be open access areas of which I'm not 100% sure where the best place would be but I do know they exist. A lot of parks like Yosemite are actually tons of back country with only a little area that people usually go to. Yosemite is a bad example because it's so mountainous and would be very hard terrain for a straight line mission. But for instance, Mojave national preserve- You could do a straight line probably coming from the direction of Moore and towards Flynn (just guessing based off the map). Approach the park rangers/whatever local authority stating you are a filmmaker, you want a permit to film, and you always use a leave no trace code of ethics.

    You talking about getting yelled at by farmers is exactly why I, living out in the sticks, don't Just Leave The House And Go For A Walk over neighbouring farmlands to get to the nearest town an hour away instead of walking in the lethal road with banks either side when I'm HoH and can't hear traffic or directions. It's trespassing, and apparently people don't understand that. Even Moor-lands are trespassing to me because it's council land. It's not public AFAIK. Nevermind dangerous.

    Parent of 4 here - I've tried to be strict with screens too and it is hard. I'm not laughing at what you said, I think it's a great attitude and I hope you manage to find a good balance with your family. From my experience, the key is to delay introducing regular screentime for as long as possible, and to get them interested and absorbed in other activities (especially outdoor and physical activities) as early as possible. If you do this, you'll create a good foundation of interest in other things and wanting to be outdoors and adventurous and moving their bodies, and wanting to spend time with you too. It also creates great early memories which will always stay with them and make it more likely they'll be active adults in the future. Then when they do start having more exposure to screens it'll be easier to manage. Another thing to note is it's much easier to control screentime with younger children. Once they get to tween/teenage you just won't be able to do much about it. This is why that foundation I mentioned is so important, so they can better self-regulate their screen time as they get older. That's my unsolicited advice for the day!

  • @kaylynnbrown1901
    @kaylynnbrown1901 13 часов назад

    You are not crazy when it comes to screen time. My two year old doesn't get screen time or its very limited. It's not easy and sometimes it would be nice to just give him a tablet and have some peace but he loves the outdoors and playing. It just takes dedication to not give in to the screens if that's what you want for your kid. As hard as it is sometimes I wouldn't change a thing about my adventurous little boy!

    You didn’t touch on a Canada straight line mission part of the question but I’m not sure it would be possible anyway. Lots of crown land that is free to travel but it’s over a thousand km’s wide and is dense forest. I guess you could do a mini mission along the Bruce peninsula?

    Just wanted to say thank you Tom. Me and my flatmate at uni loved watching all your videos and I've been a fan since geoguessr blew up in popularity since we used to play it during lunch breaks and "study periods" in the school library. This summer you inspired me to do a lot more hiking and go interrailing through Europe on a whim and it's been the best summer of adventure I've had in a long time. I was even watching some of the old straight line missions on the train and listened to a few of the podcasts you have done. Just wanted to say you have been a big inspiration to me personally to go and adventure for myself and it has given me so much confidence and inspiration to do more adventures. I'm even planning to do a (short) straight line hike with some friends hopefully at the end of the year. Keep on making these brilliant videos and best of luck to you and Verity as new parents.

    As for an interesting experience, a very different type of adventure and certainly an entertaining thing to watch would be you taking part in a season of Jet Lag: The Game, in some competition throughout Europe - it‘s usually only a few days of actual competition (plus several weeks of planning, but I assume that can be done remotely) and your skills and knowledge would be quite cool.

So you would basically have 3 lines: planned, ideal for score, and ideal for deviations. I think it shouldn't be hard to implement, as I did something similar in university, but I might be wrong tho
